What is your favourite thing about designing/developing for ecommerce?
That the site is never quite “finished.” You have the ability to continually study user behavior and leverage all of these tools out there to improve and evolve the experience.
What ecommerce trend do you hate?
When websites get too clever with category labels in the navigation. In certain cases it makes sense, but if you don’t understand how your audience thinks, then they will have a hard time finding the information they need.
Where do you go for design/development inspiration?
What’s your favourite web font?
I usually don’t play favorites!
Who’s your current ecomm crush?
Milk Makeup comes to mind. I love how well the design embraces their super fun personality and makes it more comfortable for women to buy their cosmetics. There are also a lot of smart UX and content considerations sprinkled throughout, like their instructional product videos and shoppable editorial posts.
What’s your jam while working?
I tend to rotate through a handful of playlists, but Tame Impala never fails to get me in a design groove.
What’s your favourite Shopify app and why?
Accentuate Custom Fields, simply for the power it provides you with customizing content. Another app I enjoyed working with was Product Kits, which allows you to create product bundles with minimal effort and potentially big sales opportunities.
How did you start designing Shopify sites?
I started designing my first Shopify sites at Barrel. As a creative agency that has been a Shopify Plus expert since 2011, we often work with brands to redefine their e-commerce experience.
What’s the best design advice someone has given you?
Get uncomfortable. That mentality can help you turn good work into great work.
What Shopify project are you most proud of?
I’d have to say Austin Eastciders. It’s not every day that you get the chance to partner with a brand that has such a fun personality, product, team to collaborate with.
